We Made Melamine Acoustic Wedges in BLACK color
On August 15, 2022, we received an enquiry from our regular client. They need purchase 4000 pcs of melamine acoustic wedges of 2 sizes which will be used in the Saudi Arabia Museum for both sound absorption and decorative purposes. The challenge of this order was that the customer specified the color to be black.
Acoustic wedges are known for their excellent sound absorption and noise reduction properties, they are often used in large projects such as museums, theaters, and five-star hotel.
There are many types of sound-absorbing materials, including acoustic cotton, acoustic panels, PEPP acoustic panels, wooden acoustic panels, slot acoustic panels, and perforated acoustic panels.
For this museum project, acoustic cotton material was required. However, acoustic cotton is further divided into glass wool, rock wool, polyester fiber acoustic cotton, and melamine acoustic cotton. Each material has its unique characteristics, but melamine acoustic cotton is the best material in terms of fire performance and acoustic coefficient. Therefore, it is widely used in noise reduction applications for airplanes, cruise ships, and high-end cars. However, due to the chemical nature of melamine acoustic cotton, it is almost impossible to find it in dark colors.
After searching all the melamine cotton manufacturers in China, including BASOTECT's general agent in China, we confirmed that melamine cotton does not come in black. The darkest color available is gray, which is far from the black required by the client.
After consulting with many manufacturers and project engineers, we decided to coat the melamine acoustic wedges with the black color required by the client.
In the first sampling, we failed because the paint was not suitable, and the black color appeared noticeably white.
In the second sampling, we still did not achieve the desired effect. The first coat of painting was not deep enough and appeared white. This time, we decided to spray two times, but this made the surface of the acoustic wedges very hard and unattractive. We also worried about the impact on its acoustic properties.
In the third sampling, we used a different painting . The color achieved the desired effect, and the surface was not as hard as before, but the painting made the surface brittle. This could cause the edges and corners of the acoustic wedges to chip during installation, exposing the base color.
In the fourth sampling, we used another type of painting. The result was good in all aspects, but the painting showed significant burning during the flame retardant test.
After consulting with a professor, we learned about a type of fireproof velvet fabric. Through special processing techniques, we successfully attached this fabric to our melamine acoustic wedges. The result was perfect in terms of color, craftsmanship, and acoustic coefficient.
We successfully completed and delivered this order. The client was very satisfied with the efforts we put into this project. For us, it was a challenge, but it is also what we specialized in and pleased to do.
